Sunglasses first became a fashion in the United States during the early days of the silent film era.  The first movie stars from silent films had to act under extremely powerful arc lamps because the film at that time was very slow; the stars' eyes were always red so they used dark glasses to hide their eyes in public!  The fans saw the glasses as a fashion style, and sunglasses have been trendy throughout the world ever since.
